Today I will anchor my life in the steadfast love of God.
Text: Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” (NRSV)
Reflection:
The Book of Isaiah in the Hebrew text finds it context in the exile. The book is a prophetic writing announcing both judgment and restoration for Judah, Jerusalem and the nations. When reading the Book of Isaiah, one is confronted by the “complaints” against the Hebrew people and nations, but also by the amazing grace and comfort that is being promised. One such compassionate and uplifting assurance is found in the verse above from Isaiah 41:10. Here God is reminding the Hebrew people of God’s commitment to them and saying to the people, “Do not be afraid, of anything. I am still with you, and I steadfastly love you. No matter what, and no matter what happens, I will hold you up with my strong and victorious right hand.”
Reflecting back on the past six months of the pandemic, and even considering the uncertainty of the near future, these words from Isaiah are an anchor for us. When facing the unknown, when struggling with the present, when wrestling with current problems, when stressed by the pressures of the everyday, Isaiah’s promise of God’s loving presence can bring us hope, comfort, and strength. May these inspiring words bring you a blessing today.
Prayer:
O God of Steadfast Love, help us to accept your grace and strength for ourselves today. When we experience those times where everything seems to be out of control, may your promise of support bring us peace and power. Amen.
